Having spent over a decade managing road safety programs in India and various regions globally, two-wheeler riders in India often asked me one recurring question: “Where should we position ourselves for safe riding on Indian roads and highways?”

When it comes to lane positioning, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. However, here are my top five tips to safely position and drive your two-wheeler on Indian roads:

• Ride on the Left: In India, we drive on the left side of the road, so it’s advisable to ride towards the left edge of the lane. This allows other vehicles to overtake you safely on the right. However, avoid riding to extreme left edges to avoid possible slips due to level differences, potholes, or damaged edges.
• Stay Central: While riding, maintain a central position within your lane. Riding at the inner side of the median proves to be safer as this makes you more visible to other drivers and reduces the chances of being sideswiped.
• Watch Your Mirrors: Regularly check your mirrors to be aware of the traffic behind you. If a faster vehicle approaches, consider moving slightly to the left to create space and allow them to pass safely.
• Beware of Blind Spots: Be mindful of blind spots near larger vehicles. Avoid lingering in these areas to minimize the risk of accidents.
• Communicate Your Intentions: Use hand signals, indicators, and eye contact to communicate your intentions clearly to other road users. Getting seen and being heard is the key on the road. This fosters better understanding and reduces the chances of misunderstandings.

While every motorcycle and car user is treated the same by law, conflicts and road rage can occur due to varying interpretations of traffic rules, vehicle size, lack of patience, personal ego, socio-economic backgrounds, and a disregard for fellow road users.
